A creative way to explore feelings, experiences and change

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art-making and creative processes within a therapeutic relationship. It can support people to explore feelings, experiences and patterns that may be difficult to express in words alone.

There is no requirement to be artistic. The focus is not on producing a beautiful image or being judged on creative skill. The focus is on expression, reflection, safety and meaning.

Art therapy may support people experiencing anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm or life transitions.

Who art therapy may suit

• Children and young people who communicate more easily through play, image or metaphor

• Adults who find talking therapy difficult, too direct or not enough on its own

• People who feel stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected from their feelings

• People interested in creative, body-aware or reflective approaches to therapy

What to expect

Sessions may involve drawing, painting, image-making, symbols, metaphor, conversation or reflection. You can choose how much you want to create and how much you want to talk.
